About this event

Whether you are a brand new member of Twin Cities Maker, or have been a member for a really long time but haven't been in the shop for awhile, attending a new member orientation will get you up to speed on the policies, guidelines, and culture of Twin Cities Maker.

Signup, download a copy of our handbook, and come to session. During orientation you get to meet some new people, have all your questions answered, and get acquainted with Twin Cities Maker policies, guidelines, and culture.

Orientation lasts for about 1 hour with time after for questions and support for any issues.

After you have completed orientation you will receive your fob to access the facility, which will be activated once have paid all membership fees.

If you are going to be working in the woodshop be sure to sign up for woodshop orientation immediately following this class. Check our orientations calendar to register.

Are you a maker, tradesperson, or artisan? Do you have skills other people could learn from? Curious about teaching at Twin Cities Maker (TCM) but don't know where to begin? You have come to the right place!

What You Will Learn

This orientation is your first step to teaching at TCM and it is required for all new teachers. During this process, you will learn all you need to know about:

How to get your class posted to the TCM website
Resources to support your teaching journey
What details to include in your class proposal
The timeline from completing your class proposal to your first session
Reimbursement for class materials
Paperwork to complete before and after your class
Payment details, timing, and class pricing

About the Instructor

Lars is the Education Manager at Twin Cities Maker. She has been an educator for over a decade, with experience teaching math in the classroom, woodworking classes at TCM, and lasercutter classes in makerspaces around Boston, MA. Some of the projects that she is most proud of include building an electric guitar and a book embosser. In her free time, she enjoys reading, biking, and playing the guitar.

Join this in-person orientation to learn more about the CNC routers at Twin Cities Maker.

Orientation will start in the classroom—not the CNC room.

Overview of the CNC routers
Rules and Restrictions
How to get Signed-off
Demonstration of toolpath generation using VCarve
Demo cut on Shapeoko or the 4' × 8' Sequoyatec

CNC orientation is generally held on the first Friday of the month.

Ceramics Orientation (Mon, October 05, 2026)

TAll members who want to use the new Ceramics studio will need to be oriented to the new space, policies, and processes that will make this a wonderful place to create.... and this includes members who were already oriented to the old studio.

The general orientation will orient you with the Twin Cities Maker (TCM) as a whole, while our TCM Ceramics (TCMC) orientation will focus specifically on the processes and procedures in our ceramics studio. We recommend completing the general orientation before the ceramics orientation. You do not need to attend orientation before taking a class or workshop. However, orientation is a requirement to keep using the studio after a class or workshop ends.

Our ceramics orientation will cover:

Our Safety and Firing Policy
Consumables (clay, glaze, firing)
Reserving Tools
TCMC Member Storage
Classes vs. Sign-Offs (the sign-offs allow you to bypass our mandatory 101 classes through a portfolio review)
... and most importantly: a Studio Tour!!!

NOTE: *You must attend the general Twin Cities Maker Orientation ("New Member Orientation") in addition to our Ceramics Studio Orientation.*

Festool Domino Joiner - Basic Training (Wed, October 21, 2026)

FESTOOL DOMINO TRAINING

This class provides basic training and familiarity with the Festool Domino for you to be signed off and granted access.

Members are asked to make a $5 minimum donation to the woodshop for purchasing tool bits and other consumables, and you are encouraged to bring your own stock/scrap pieces to this class to practice joining so everyone can test the tool out and get a feel for using it.

At the end of this class members will be given access to both Festool Dominos which are secured in a locked storage cabinet.
