Slipcasting pumpkins: join this one‑day workshop to cast, carve, and customize ceramic pumpkins and jack-o'-lanterns.
About this Class
Slipcasting gives you a repeatable, almost magical way to shape clay, and this one‑day workshop is designed to show you how accessible and empowering the process can be. You’ll learn to pour, release, and refine forms while also handbuilding details that make each piece uniquely yours. Whether you’re new to clay or expanding your studio skills, you’ll end up with a finished ceramic pumpkin, a working understanding of molds, and the confidence to keep exploring slipcasting at home or in the studio.
For glaze application and final firing of the work you produce in this class, you have three options:
1. JJ will complete a basic glaze and glaze firing for scheduled pick-up.
2. A discounted rate for the subsequent glazing workshop.
3. TCMC members may choose to glaze their work independently in our studio.
Please note: This is not a mold-making class, as we will be using existing molds provided by the instructor. If you are interested in mold-making, look for JJ's "Cast it in Clay: Intro to Slipcasting & Moldmaking" 3-full-day workshop.
Recommended Experience Level
A basic foundation in ceramics hand building is encouraged, but not required.
Skills You Will Learn
1.How to use slip molds to cast beautiful objects in clay.
2. How you can modify a cast object by:
A. Cutting away parts (carve a jack-o-lantern).
B. Adding texture via slip trailing (texture, bumps, and unique surface decoration designs)
C. Adding features (a handle for a mug, a lip for a lid)
D. What happens when you remove your object from the mold a little early
E. Strategically warp your cast pumpkin.
F. Using mason stains to add color.
Items to Bring/Wear for Class
- A lunch or snack — We will have a 30 minute break, so that we can eat lunch.
- Closed‑toe shoes — Required for safety when working with plaster and tools.
- Clothes you don’t mind getting messy — Slip can splash; comfortable studio wear is best.
- Apron — Optional but helpful for keeping clothes clean.
- Notebook — For process notes and sketches.
- Reusable water bottle — Staying hydrated.

About the Instructor
JJ (they/them) is a teaching artist, designer, and handyperson living in South Minneapolis and serves on the TCMC volunteer leadership team. JJ teaches a variety of classes across the Twin Cities and Greater MSP region and completed their Masters of Fine Art in sculpture in intermedia at the University of Iowa in 2022. Their creative practice engages with phenomenologies in playful connection, eco-gratitude, and material experimentation. JJ is passionate about sharing knowledge and witnessing their students succeed in learning, achieve their goals, and enjoy creative play.
