Dive into the wonderful world of refrigeration and learn more about mini-splits.
Have you been wondering about those DIY mini-split systems for sale everywhere? This class is for anyone interested in installing their own mini-split but who wants to know about how refrigeration systems work, how a mini-split works, and how to make smarter choices when it comes to DIY’ing anything mechanical. This class will cover the basic refrigeration system, handy tools, popular brands, and common pitfalls with DIY HVAC systems.
Hands-on components will include pipe bending, leak checking, and basic diagnostics.
Cory Due is a local 539 pipefitter who focuses on service work and HVAC. They have both a welding degree and HVAC degree and largely work on commercial systems. They enjoy teaching and making mechanical concepts more accessible to all. When they aren’t teaching they’re scheming about house projects, tending to their garden, or spending time with their family and menagerie of animals.
This time is set aside to perform tasks around making sure our tools stay in peak performance and trying to ensure that the tools stay in good working order during the month.
Never repaired a tool or performed maintenance before – not a problem!! There are maintenance task for all levels of expertise – and we’ll always have at least one person around that can help you learn!
This is orientation required for use of the metal shop at TC Maker Minneapolis. We explain our equipment, safety procedures, storage and training requirements for our more advanced tools. Also provide recommendations for PPE, consumables and other things to help make your use of the metal shop effective for you and our other members.
At 6:45 we will do a brief training for use of the metal shear, which requires in-person checkoff. Following that, you will be allowed to use our 4' sheet metal shear. You can attend either or both sessions if you wish.
Please be on time and let me know if you cannot attend. Thank you
Design your own furniture. Learn the workflow used to take a rough idea to final piece by working on your own project.
These classes will take place in a small interactive classroom setting that encourages participation to work on your own ideas. In the first session, we will start by learning the anatomy of furniture and how things are made. Then we will review brief history of furniture design and inspiration for our own projects. In the third session, we review principles of good design and how to sketch even if your not good at drawing. And in the last session, we will explore all the aspects of completing your project. The course is meant as a introduction for people wanting to design what they make in the wood shop.
Desire for self-expression required.
Shop time will be limited, but joinery will be demonstrated in the shop.
Prepare for the class by having a small idea of what you would like to design and make.
Tim Bednar studied at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and was awarded a Merit Design Scholarship. After a career as a web developer, he recently returned to furniture design and wood working. He is an Assistant Wood Shop Manager at TC Maker and teaches the Woodworking 101 Class.
Come learn about the jewelry bench! We have tools to support fabrication workflows as well as casting (red sand and investment casting). The instructor's subject area is silversmithing, but all interest areas are welcomed as we seek to expand our jewelry-making offerings.
In this orientation, you will learn each tool's role in the jewelry-making process, from cutting and forming to soldering and polishing. This department is distinct from the Lapidary department, but the skills go hand-in-hand!
Measuring and Marking
Forming
Cutting and Reducing
Joining
Polishing
Various Jigs and Miscellaneous
We will end by discussing what's next for the jewelry department, how to get involved, and where to find resources for learning more.

MUST BE A MEMBER OF TCMAKER!
What tools do we have? Where are they? What do they look like?
Our wiki (wiki.tcmaker.org) needs an overhaul, and we need a group of volunteers to pull it off. Expect a glass of wine, collaboration with fellow makers, and a better-organized collective knowledge base.
No experience needed! Bring a laptop since we'll likely only have one PC set up, but keep in mind this first meeting will be heavily focused on planning, styling, and structure.
We'll be starting fresh with a MediaWiki (like Wikipedia) installation, pulling from the current Wiki.js setup for source material—at least for the parts that aren't wildly out-of-date.
Fiber Night on Wednesday in the lobby for anyone who wants to join! We'll be working on beginning knitting and crochet but are open to any other suggestions
Email artifactory@tcmaker.org with questions!
Twin Cities Maker (TC Maker) is a non-profit, all volunteer run, community maker space based in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.
Our mission is to make, share, and learn.
We have a maker space (The Hack Factory) for members to build projects using various media and technologies, from wood and metal working, electronics to fabrics, laser cutters to 3D Printers and beyond.
We invite you to come visit our space and take a tour to learn about our community, and how you can participate in it. We welcome folks to check out the space on Wednesday evenings. A tour of the space will start in the lobby at 7 PM.
Learn more about us at our website! https://www.tcmaker.org/
This event is a tour only. Non-members are not permitted to operate any tools or equipment. Appropriate safety precautions MUST be taken before entering the shop.
Curious about high-detail 3D printing? Want to print miniatures, detailed models, jewelry prototypes, or parts with smooth finishes? This is a great place to explore resin printing.
In this hands-on session, we’ll walk through the complete resin workflow using our Anycubic Photon M5S Pro printers. You’ll learn printer setup, file preparation, washing and curing, and safe cleanup practices so you feel confident working with resin.
If you’ve used filament printers before, the process will feel familiar, just a bit messier.
Resin printing can have a noticeable smell, and we provide the necessary PPE, including gloves and masks.
You do not need to complete the Beginner or Intermediate filament classes before attending. If you’re all new to 3D printing, we recommend starting with our 3D Printing Lab Orientation and Beginner Class to learn filament printing on the Prusa i3 MK3S printers. The Intermediate class unlocks access to the Bambu X1C (with AMS) and P1S printers.
If resin printing is what excites you most, feel free to jump right in and register.
By the end of the session, you’ll be checked off to use the Anycubic Photon M5S Pro independently.
We also offer 3D scanner training for the Creality Raptor Pro upon request.
If the class is full, reach out and we’ll try to schedule a 1:1 session depending on availability.
Got questions? Email 3D@tcmaker.org and we’re happy to help.
This hands-on workshop teaches on how to use the bench-top mortiser and the table saw tenoning jig for repeatable, fast and accurate joints.
Learn the joinery technique that has held furniture together for centuries. This is a great alternative to the Festool Domino's loose tenon or hand-cut methods. You will learn how to dial in your setups for repeatable, precise joints that offer maximum strength and a professional finish. Whether you're building a table, chair or shelf, this class provides the technical foundation you need for heirloom-quality results.
Experience using table saw and drill press recommended, but not required.
(1) We will learn why mortise and tenon joints are preferred for making quality furniture, (2) dive into mortising machine set up for repeatable and accurate cutting of square holes, (3) and the safe execution of vertical cuts on the table saw for precise tenons. After the class, you will be able to achieve gap free joinery on any project.
Clothing suitable to the wood shop. Wear close-toed shoes and avoid loose, dangling clothing and accessories.
Eye and hearing protection is required. Dust masks and eye/ear protection are available to borrow but bringing your own is recommended.
Tim Bednar is an Assistant Wood Shop Manager at TC Maker and also teaches the Woodworking 101 class. After studying at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, he spent many years as a minister and then web developer before returning to the furniture design and woodcraft.

Whether your project requires a tabletop, shelf or panel, this class provides a technical foundation for efficient use of expensive wood.
Some experience using a table saw is required.
(1) We will learn why biscuits keep panels flush during glue-ups, (2) dive into referencing the machine fence versus the baseplate for repeatable slot depth and height, (3) and the safe execution of plunge cuts to ensure your joints stay exactly where you marked them. After the class, you will be able to tackle your next glue-up with confidence and get precise results.

When they aren't teaching they're scheming about house projects, tending to their garden, or spending time with their family and menagerie of animals.
